Permits Required for Cryotherapy Installations

Are special permits required for cryotherapy businesses operating in the United States of America?

In spite of what most cryotherapy chamber manufacturers tell you SPECIAL PERMITS ARE REQUIRED for the installation of EVERY cryotherapy chamber (and many other cryotherapy devices) in ALL 50 states.

The requirements for permits vary with location, as well as type of installation and the local requirements of the Authority Having Jurisdiction (or AHJ). It is important to familiarize yourself with the codes adopted by your jurisdiction.

Nationwide, AHJ's have adopted several different versions of the International Building Code (IBC), International Fire Code (IFC), International Mechanical Code (IMC), and International Electrical Code (IEC), etc.  This means the Code in effect at the location of installation or use may reference different sections in different states.

For example, in California the 2016 CFC is the currently adopted Fire Code.  To locate the Code requirements pertaining to installation and use of a cryotherapy chamber a Californian would mainly reference 2016 CFC Chapters 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 50, 55, and 63.  However, if a chamber were being installed somewhere in Wyoming, the owner may need to reference 2006 IFC Chapters 1, 3, 4, 6, 27, 30, 32, and 40. Regulations vary by location.

After studying these chapters one quickly realizes that this is just the tip of the iceberg.  The IFC is intimately linked with the IBC, IMC, and IEC, as well as external standards such as NFPA 55, NFPA 90A, NFPA 91, CGA P-18, and ASME B31.3, to name a few.  But which of these codes apply to refrigerant-cooled units, nitrogen-cooled units, CO2 cooled-units, or localized (handheld) cryotherapy units?
